About the HICC organization and network structure

The HICC was established by researchers whose research and clinical efforts are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of HoFH. The initiative is led by a primary committee consisting of Prof Frederick Raal (South Africa), Prof Marina Cuchel (USA), Prof Dirk Blom (South Africa), and Prof Kees Hovingh (The Netherlands). Together, they proactively collaborated with a large number of international colleagues actively involved in the care of HoFH patients in their respective countries. Recently, the HICC steering committee was expanded with new members to achieve more successes in the future and encourage innovation in the field: Dr Iulia Iatan (Canada), Prof Tomas Freiberger (CZ), Prof Alberico Catapano (Italy), Prof Meral Kayıkçıoğlu (Turkey), Dr Rens Reeskamp (The Netherlands) and Prof Fahad Alnouri (Saudi Arabia).

HICC: A Global Collaboration for HoFH

HICC serves as a global collaboration between physicians and scientists dedicated to helping patients with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). Through the collective efforts of our collaborators, we have built a database of over 900 patients, providing invaluable insights into this rare and severe form of familial hypercholesterolemia.

Our National Coordinators

A subset of our collaborators act as National Coordinators. These coordinators are responsible for:

  • Contacting physicians involved in the treatment of HoFH within their respective countries and encouraging their participation in this initiative.

  • Ensuring the study protocol meets all country-specific regulatory requirements.

  • Assisting with submissions to local Ethics Committees and Institutional Review Boards as necessary.

  • Interacting with the steering committee and monitoring adherence to the protocol.

Our Inclusive Approach

This initiative aims to be all-inclusive and strives to collaborate with similar initiatives at the regional level. In this context, HICC is part of the FH Study Collaborators (FHSC).
